Pet Dentistry

January 25, 2018

National Pet Dental Health Month is coming up in the month of February. This means veterinary practices around the nation will be hilighting the importance of animal dentistry, and many practices, such as ours, discount dental cleanings and at-home dental healthcare products.

Why is pet dentistry so important? Because chronic dental problems can lead to infection, pain, loss of teeth, and diseases of organs such as the heart and liver. Also, because it is often difficult for us as pet owners to brush our pets' teeth daily or even several times a week. These reasons are why dental cleanings are so important.

Good dental cleanings are done while the pet is under anesthesia. Why? Have you ever tried to get your cat to sit still while you open its mouth wide and poke around at its teeth gums? Anesthesia is necessary to do a good cleaning, polishing, evaluate under the gums, and check for any other issues. Routine dental cleanings done before your pet has severe plaque build-up often mean the dentals are simple and quick.

Dental x-rays are needed for some patients in order to identify issues with tooth roots and to help determine if damaged or cracked teeth need to be removed. Pets generally go home the same day of their dental, and in many cases, are sent home with dental care products that help keep teeth clean and reduce future plaque build-up. Better at-home dental healthcare means less frequent dental cleanings for your pet.

Not all home dental care products are alike. Some have never been proven to actually help clean teeth. Our doctors are selective about the home dental care products we carry, because it is important to them that we are able to provide you with something that will work.

T/D Diet: This prescription food for dogs and cats helps clean teeth and is about as effective as daily brushing.

Oravet: These daily chews for dogs are clinically proven to freshen breath and clean teeth.
